Lasik or Contacts?

Nowadays, most people who wear glasses wear them for style. But why wear contacts? Contacts aren’t stylish. Except for a few types, you can’t even see them. Wouldn’t it be better to just bite the bullet and get LASIK eye surgery?

There is now a huge debate between LASIK and contacts. Which is more efficient? Which is healthier? Is LASIK too expensive? All of these questions have caused great rifts amongst people searching for the proper solution for their eye correction.

As with any debate, there is a lot of useless fluff floating around that is propagated by those who seek some benefit. Hopefully, this article will clear things up for you. First of all, let’s talk efficiency. Is LASIK more efficient, or are contacts?

Well, with contacts, you have a prescription that has to be renewed every year and filled at your leisure, which with such busy work and school schedules, is hard to do. Also, you have to make extra time every morning and night to put in and take out your contacts. On top of all of that, you have to make sure you are properly storing your contacts in expensive contact solution for the duration of their life.

Don’t forget that your contacts have to be changed on a regular basis, which means you have to keep up with when they have to be replaced. Do you suffer from astigmatism? There is a chance you will be out of luck, and forced to purchase extremely expensive weighted contacts, since regular ones won’t sit right on the shape of your eye. On the other hand, with LASIK, you have to go through a couple small appointments to make sure that you are a viable candidate for the operation and to arrange a time.

After that, you have your operation, recovery time and a checkup and you are pretty much done. Of course, with either solution you will have to continue your regularly scheduled optometrist appointments, but there is really no way around that. If you feel that it is more efficient to deal with buying contacts on a regular basis, to deal with putting them in and taking them out every day and to deal with storing them properly and inspecting them for damage regularly, then contacts may just be for you.

If you would rather have a simple outpatient procedure, a couple of days of recovery and great vision for years and years to come, maybe LASIK is for you. While contacts are a temporary solution, LASIK permanently solves your problem. Health is another important point for those who are considering both sides of this debate.

Contacts should only be worn for certain amounts of time per day and should be properly cared for and stored and properly disposed of on a regular basis to prevent damage to your eyes that may require surgery. Improper contact usage can cause bacterial infections that may leave your eye scarred and require you to have surgery anyway whereas with LASIK, only normal eye care is necessary after your recovery period is up.

Some people are scared of how much LASIK may cost. Honestly, if you add up how much you are spending on contacts, solution and how much time you are wasting each month, you may find that LASIK, with it’s nearly hassle free advantage is very appealing, compared to what you’re already spending.

Hopefully you have now been armed with more valuable information to better make your decision on contacts versus LASIK eye surgery. You should talk with your eye doctor about specifics of both solutions to determine which is best for you.
